Who Is responsible for teaching 'white' people about racism?

on Wed, 2020-06-10 12:58

Who is responsible for teaching 'white' people about racism? Actually, we are, and people of color have lived inside this nightmare for far too long. I invite you to take a look at this list of resources. I would add the PBS series done by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. whose book, Stony The Road, traces the tragic history of Reconstruction, including The Great Betrayal, and subsequent creation by the media of a white supremacy narrative still permanently woven into every aspect of our society today. The consequences threaten every aspect of our communities and hope for the future.

What a Community Looks Like When We Are All In This Together

Parker Palmer describes how a community interacts and how the 'grace of great things' informs us. To find common ground seems more important than ever, especially during the COVID19 pandemic.

"In the community of truth, we interact with non human forms of being that are as important and powerful as the human and sometimes even more so. This is a community held together not only by our personal powers of thought and feeling, but also by the power of "the grace of great things." (From an essay by Rainer Maria Rilke)

By great things I mean the subjects around which the circle of seekers has

Where the Path Might Lead

on Fri, 2016-12-30 14:18

On the grounds here at Bailey Farms last weekend, nine women walked many different paths and joined the 79 women who came before them on a Principle Quest retreat.

No matter our age, all of us seek a clear path, a deep commitment and the support of a loving community.

Thanksgiving reminds us as well of what's important – healing and giving thanks, just as in 1863 when President Lincoln, at the persistent urging of Sarah Hale, signed the proclamation to make Thanksgiving a hational holiday.

May you enjoy a blessed and fun Thanksgiving!

Opposite of Loneliness

on Sun, 2015-05-10 13:09

Marina Keegan captured a precious concept when she wrote: "It’s not quite love, and it’s not quite community; it’s just this feeling that there are people, an abundance of people, and we are all in this together. Who are on your team."

While the sixty women who have attended a Principle Quest Retreat cannot realistically form a community, I hope each is forming such a community within her own sphere.

Keegan's posthumous collection of essays and short stories The Opposite of Loneliness will touch you, and maybe even inspire you to be sure you have a few people solidly on your team!

What Exactly Creates Value in a Network?

on Sat, 2015-01-31 15:23

What makes a network work? What does a community – either gender or affinity based – need to be of lasting value? This blog details 7 steps to creating a network, examining why the 'old boys' club' is so strong – and highly frustrating for women. What lessons might you take away and begin to use in your own networks in a new and more courageous way?

Why We Are Here (at a retreat...or just alive today!)

Why Are We Here?

We are here because there is no refuge

finally from ourselves.

Until a woman confronts herself

in the eyes and hearts of her fellow women

she is running.

Until she shares her secret with them,

she has no safety from it

She can know neither herself nor anyone else.

she will be alone.

Where else but in our common ground

can we find such a mirror?

Here, a woman can at last appear clearly to

herself, not as the giant of her dreams,

nor the dwarf of her fears,

but as a woman, part of a whole,

with a share in its purpose.

In this ground we can each take root and
